History Lesson: *Australian football began on the goldfields of Victoria and was played with a round ball. *The game later became a means for cricketers to keep fit during the winter. *The game was played in parks with teams of up to 40 players; the field could be up to half a mile in length. *In some variations the game was only won when a team had kicked two goals. *The Melbourne Football Club and the official rules of the game were created in 1859. *Between 1859-1899, teams consisted of 20 players. *Bouncng the ball while running and behind posts were introduced in 1866. *The 100 minute rule was introduced in 1869. *The first football game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was held in 1876. *The Victorian Football Association (VFA) was established in 1877. *In 1897, 8 senior teams (Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne) broke from the VFA and created the Victorian Football League (VFL). *Richmond left the VFA and joined the VFL in 1908. *Footscray, Hawthorn and North Melbourne left the VFA and joined the VFL in 1925. *In 1977, the first State of Origin game was played at Subiaco oval in Perth, which was contested by Western Australia and Victoria. *South Melbourne relocated to Sydney in 1982 and was ...
