you make a good point. except 4 one thing. all those players had amazing qualities. except nobody could do what gazza could.

  • ferrel81 says:

seriosly… there are all these deluded cat fans out there who think ablett was the best ever… get over it, he was not the best. he may just squeeze into the best half dozen of all time but there are a number of players you’d pick before you picked ablett – and carey is definately one of them.

  • pw711 says:

ferrel81 is a fukin tool who know fuck all about footy, carey was a superstar, but still could not do what ablett did. didnt see carey boot as many goals as gazza and start on the wing. and by the way id say leigh matthews better than both as far as influence on a game when it mattered over a long long time, thats why he was named the greatest player ever. but even leigh couldnt do what gazza did.

i think ferrel is just winding up the cats fans. Im a hawk supporter and rate Ablett sr the best player i have ever seen. If people never saw him live his highlight reels show something very unique. A 1 in a million athlete with footy ability oozing from his pores. He had the “X” factor, as did carey and Hird in my opinion. (i have seen the 3 of them tear apart the hawks off their own boot. But i put Ablett at number 1. Just spectacular….

    ferrel81 is a joke……and obviously gay

  • PanayotiProductions says:

ablett sr was the greatest he just didnt have a good enuf team to back him up.

  • alerom23471 says:

    Hes second behind Carey

  • magri1000 says:

mate, second behind carey!!!people like you are fucked

  • Victorian105 says:

Ablett kicked over 1000 goals and carey couldnt. Neither has Lloyd or fevola. Ablett Snr played in the middle, on the wing, half forward and full forward. Find a pleyer today who’s done that. Mate, he was the complete package. And cats fans arnt deluded, just passionate.

Ablett went on to win three Coleman Medals at the age when Carey retired. The saddest thing about Abletts career was the arrival of Gary Ayres at Geelong. A since ‘failed’ coach. Kevin Sheedy once said “I’d have him playing off the bench until he is 40″. If only.

  • tomelifeisjustonebig says:

    And right.

  • FalseFlagAmerican says:

    Carey??? That is rubbish.

YABLEEEETT!! was the best footy player I have the privilege to watch since I started watching this game in 1977.

I barrack for Collingwood, so I am not expressing bias towards my club, but you are off your rocker nominating Carey. He wasn’t even the best North player ever; Blight, Dench, Schimma and Keith Greig were better players than Carey, and I also reckon that Brereton was a better C/H/F.

Carey was a gem of a player, but, Ablett was bloody amazing to watch.

  • dmarks270 says:

    one word god

  • alerom23471 says:

How am i “off my rocker”
    you tool
im not the only person with that opinion.
Most experts would say Carey in fact look at Mike Sheehans top players. Carey is number 1.
I respect your opinion but i dont understand why you would be so surprised as to why ive said Carey is better. You clearly havnt watched enough North Melbourne games to comment.

  • grievezy9 says:

u tool carey was a good player but could never do half the shit ablett could do on the feild.. who kicks 9 goals in a loseing gf?? and single handly almost one a gf of is own boot..

  • justndorse says:

watching this again…this time because mark robinson told me to! :)

  • FalseFlagAmerican says:

I generally don’t have much time for Sheahan’s overly conservative opinions on footy.
From memory he has Carey at 1, followed by Lethal and then Whitten. I never saw Whitten play, but I would have Ablett at 1 followed by Lethal who was a GUN. Then I would possibly have Malcolm Blight, Vossy, Buck’s, Robert Harvey, Dunstall, Plugger, S.Madden, & Dench.
The Duck has to be further down the list, possibly between 10-30.
Was he a better player than Archer, Dempsey, Schimma & Greig?
    In my opinion, no.

  • swarbs13 says:

10-30 what a joke, Carey Matthews and Ablett is a raffle for number 1

  • maxypaxy13 says:

The one at the end wasn’t a mark. Bad call by the ump.

  • Richoman78 says:

Richo has done that. Richo is the only player who can rival Ablett senior. Too close to call.

  • drewpoopadoop says:

RICHO! You are kidding right, good player in an average team. He might make it into the top 50 the big sook!

  • Beamer22 says:

    Too close to call?

    Seriously, get a clue.

  • Coldacre says:

I say this as an Essendon supporter: Gary Ablett is the best player I have ever seen. Carey was huge, Hird amazing, Voss brilliant, Plugga a machine, Dunstall precision…… but none of them compare to the great man. Ablett was the best.

  • MrNoahDeer says:

What about coleman, barrassi, skilton, bunton. barrassi and skilton both say that whitten is the best all round player they have seen.

  • zenmoon3 says:

Richo wouldn’t wipe the mud off Ablett Snr’s boots.
